Privatizar el agua puede encender una mecha

SALVA LAS AGUAS DE GRECIA DE LA PRIVATIZACIÓN

La sociedad que formamos tiene un enemigo declarado. Se llama Especulación Financiera y se apellida Capitalismo. Uno de sus máximos exponentes es el FMI. Otro, toda la ristra de grandes compañías privadas que cotizan en bolsa. Un tercero, todos los políticos que aceptan un retiro dorado como consejeros de esas compañías. Un enemigo de tres cabezas que ahora quiere privatizar el agua de Grecia… lo que significa que en España ya hay alguien pensando en ello.

El agua es lo más preciado de este mundo. Es un precio que no se mide en dinero, sino en sangre. Privatizar el agua puede encender una mecha. Los grandes políticos y empresarios europeos vuelven a demostrar lo bajo de su moral y su valor social, además de lo endeble de sus inteligencias.

La Iniciativa contra  la privatización del agua en Grecia fue fundada en julio 2012 en un esfuerzo para informar a la opinión pública y para conectar a las diferentes organizaciones y personas que se resisten a aceptar que  una empresa privada controle  un bien público necesario para la supervivencia de personas, plantas y animales. La iniciativa no cuenta con ninguna financiación y es un trabajo voluntario  de personas que exigen la gestión democrática y racional de este bien preciado.

Mientras que en Grecia no existen precedentes, la experiencia internacional ha demostrado que la privatización del agua ha dado lugar a menudo a una subida de precios y, en algunos casos, al deterioro de la calidad del agua.

• ¿Cómo será el suministro de agua en zonas de baja densidad de población, donde la empresa privada no encontrará rentabilidad económica?

• ¿En qué carga ecológica puede conducir a la pérdida de control social adicional en cuanto a la cantidad de agua que se bombea y donde se vende?

• ¿Por qué una empresa privada puede apropiarse y beneficiarse de las infraestructuras que han sido pagadas por los ciudadanos?

Debemos oponernos con firmeza a la privatización de nuestros recursos hídricos. El agua potable es un derecho humano y debe seguir siendo un bien común público.

La privatización del agua es un ataque contra la democracia y los valores básicos del ser humano. Si no podemos controlar nuestro suministro de agua, significa que realmente ya no controlamos nada.

SAVE GREEK WATER FROM PRIVATIZATION

The Initiative for the non privatization of water in Greece was founded in July 2012 in an effort to inform the public opinion and to interconnect different organizations and people that are reluctant to accept the right of a private corporation to control a public good necessary for the survival of people, plants and animals. The initiative has no funding and it is a volontary undertaking of people of different expertise and political grounds that concur on thedemocratic and rational management of this precious good.

While in Greece there is no precedent, the international experience has shown that the privatisation of water has resulted often in the skyrocketing of prices  and in some cases in the deterioration of water quality.

Although the trend in Europe is the return of water supply companies management to the hands of municipalities, once again with a twenty year delay the Greek state is being ‘modernised’ towards policies of the past.

• What will be the fate of the water supply in sparsely populated, remote areas that equal high costs for private initiatives ?

• To what ecological burden can lead the loss of further social control as to the amount of water that is pumped and where it is sold?

• What exactly will be sold at the end and to what damage to the society as a whole since the high-cost investments of these enterprises are their infrastructuresthat have already been paid at the expense of taxpayers?

Such issues make us particularly cautious to the rhetoric of ecological “sesitivities” being showcased  by the proponents of private initiative in the field of water resources and render us skeptical as to the willingness with which the Greek government seems to be eager to ‘ disengage’ itself from a multi-dimensional issue such as the management of water resources of the country.

SAVE GREEK WATER is a Greek citizens’ initiative that opposes corporate privatization of our water resources and its distribution. Clean affordable water is a human right and must remain a public commons. Our initiative wants to inform all concerned on the implications of allowing corporations to comodify and profit from our limited water resources. The privatization of water is first a question of democracy. If we cannot control our supply of water do we really control anything at all? Our campaign wants to use this opportunity to sensitize the public on the larger issue of careful water management for private and agricultural use.
